Warren Kennison

Biography

Warren Samuel Kennison, MD, son of Herbert and Stella Kennison, died October 20, 2008 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Sam was born in Denver, Colorado July 3, 1917. Sam met Dorothy Reber in Michigan where they married 56 years ago. He and Dorothy moved from Birmingham, Michigan to Lookout Mountain in Golden Colorado in 1968 where Sam continued his private psychoanalytic practice. He retired from his practice in 1992.

During WWII, Sam served in the Coast Guard, patrolling the beautiful Washington coast and serving in the U. S. Marine Hospital in Seattle. He continued his service to his country in the Public Health Services working with veterans suffering from post-traumatic distress. After his honorable discharge, Sam continued his medical studies at the University of Michigan, where he earned his degree in psychiatry and at the New York Institute where he completed his training in psychoanalysis. He taught as a training psychoanalyst at the University of Colorado Medical School and served as president of both the Denver and Michigan Psychoanalytic Societies. The American Psychoanalytic Society recognized Sam for his fifty years of service.

Sam loved riding his horse throughout the Colorado Rockies and was a member of the Roundup Riders of the Rockies. He was an excellent fly fisherman and inspired others to learn to fly fish on the beautiful streams of Taylor Park.

Sam and Dorothy moved from their home of 40 years on Lookout Mountain to Los Alamos, New Mexico, two years ago to be closer to their grandchildren.

Sam is preceded in death by his daughter, Diane, his brother, Herbert, Jr., and his sister, Florence. He will be missed by his wife Dorothy, son Warren, Jr. of Golden Colorado, step-granddaughters Stephanie Spivey (Jerry) and Susan Vollmer (Dennis), and three step-great-grandchildren, Allison, Anna, and Henry; son Harry (Bernadine) of Charlottesville Virginia; and son Jack (Meg), grandson Zak, and granddaughter Erin of Los Alamos; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Next summer, his ashes will be placed in the Tincup Cemetery in Colorado near where Sam and Dorothy built their cabin in 1965. There was a memorial service at Aspen Ridge Lodge in Los Alamos, Sunday, October 26. There will be a memorial service at Mount Vernon Country Club in Golden, Colorado, Sunday, November 16, at 2:00.

Sam, you were a very influential supervisor and fantastic person. My work with you corrected errors and got me thinking in a genuinely psychoanalytic way. You were kind, and a person of integrity. You and Leo Rangell best embody for me the essence of our field. Thank you for all.
