Biography


Opal Wiggins, 97, of Winterset, died March 14, 2017 at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, family will be present at these times. The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, at Ochiltree Funeral Service with burial to follow in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation and online condolences may be left at ochiltree.com.
Opal Marie Wiggins, daughter of H. Ralph and Edith (Cain) Shetterly, was born September 9, 1919 at home in De Soto, Iowa. She attended schools in the De Soto area and graduated from De Soto High in 1938. Opal was united in marriage with Virgil Wiggins on September 25, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Opal stayed busy raising their four children. Once the kids were older she traveled with Virgil, helping him with office work and payroll for the construction business. Over the years, she worked at the Madison County Hospital, Montross’s and Graham’s as well as countless hours of volunteering. Opal was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset and a lifetime member of both the Rebekah Lodge and VFW Auxiliary. She was a talented seamstress and quilter, who loved cooking for her family. Most of all, Opal was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who cherished the time she spent with her friends and family.
Opal is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Stan Fearnside) Halverson of Fresno, CA; sons, Stephen (Jane) Wiggins of Winterset; Kevan (Tammy) Wiggins of West Des Moines; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandson and one great great granddaughter on the way; brother, C. Edwin (Evelyn) Shetterly of Mesa, AZ; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Edith Shetterly; husband, Virgil Wiggins; son, Ronald Wiggins; sister, Oda Bess Kramme; brothers, Roland Shetterly and Henry Shetterly.
