Richard Wheeldon began life on this earth on June 9, 1931 at a house in Earlham, the son of Morris Herschel and Opal Naomi (Sheets) Wheeldon. He was the sixth of ten children growing up in rural Madison and Dallas Counties. Richard graduated from Earlham High School in 1949 followed by enlistment in the United States Marine Corps serving from 1949 to 1952 as a Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Operator. Upon returning from the service, he began working for Harris & Sons Construction in Earlham as a heavy equipment operator. During this time while living in Stuart, Richard met MaryLou Highland. The couple began dating and started their 47 years of marriage on August 14, 1954. The union was blessed with two children Cheryl Jean and Richard, Jr. Making their home in Earlham, Richard continued working for Harris & Sons Construction for an additional 16 years until 1968 when he established his own company, Wheeldon & Son Construction. Richard had a love of the land and worked throughout Madison, Dallas, Guthrie, Union, Adair Counties and beyond, doing all types of soil conservation work. His greatest pride was in a job well done, a characteristic he instilled in his children that a job worth doing was worth doing right and the best you can. While in Earlham, Richard served as a member of the City Council. He was a member of Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA) and served as an officer on the board of directors for central Iowa. In 1983, Richard and MaryLou moved from Earlham to Lorimor where Richard could be closer to his second love, farming. Helping out on his son-in-law and daughter’s farm was his idea of relaxing from the toils of work. Besides that, it kept him closer to his grandkids, which he enjoyed spending time with. Richard continued working in the construction business even to the day he suffered a stroke in November 2001, which left him with limited use of his left side. He and MaryLou enjoyed 47 years and 3 days of marriage when her death in August of 2002 left him without his partner in life. Richard, determined as he was, continued to live at home alone for the next six years until he moved to the Afton Care Center and made that his home for his final four years. Richard is survived by his children, Cheryl (Tim) Erickson of Lorimor and Richard (Irene) Wheeldon, Jr. of Martensdale; five grandchildren, Candace (Jeremy) Kerrigan, Lindsay (Carl) Eklund, Matthew (Debbie) Erickson, Nathan (Tiffany) Wheeldon and Kenna (Randy) Willey and eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marie (Henry) Jay, Jean (Bob) Boots, Mary Travis, and Ellen Thompson, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, MaryLou; parents; three brothers, Donald (at birth), Ralph and Bobby; and two sisters, Dorothy and Betty.

Rich and Irene, My brother, James, sent us an e mail that your Dad had passed away, Rich, we didn't know your parents but know he was well respected by his friends, neighbors, and business friends. He did well after his stroke, it was a blessing for him and your Mom. Don had his stroke in 1998 and was 80 in February, and thankfully still at home. God bless you all with wonderful memories of your parents.

Our sympathy to all of you family at the passing of your father. Years ago, Richard came into our lives, without our planning or asking and helped us in a big way that is still benefitting us today. It was a real serendipity! It was in 1977, a very dry year. Bear Creek was dry. Our old farm pond had silted in and completely dried up. Ellis was hauling water for the cattle from Earlham, dumping it into an old dry well and hand pumping it out as needed for the cattle. One day Ellis was doing an outside carpentry project for Jerry Kuehn when Richard came along and stopped to visit. He had just completed machine work for Ralph Stanley and decided to go on north to see the home where he had grown up. During this visit, Ellis told Richard about our need for livestock water. Richard said since he had his machinery in the area, he could do a little work on our pond for a small fee. He also knew there had been a government program to help rural people with pond improvement that might still be available. He started work on our pond right away. We did get some government funds so were able to hire Richard to do a complete renovation of the pond. He worked quickly and efficiently and left one evening, essentially done, but coming back in the morning to complete a few details and take his machinery. During the night it rained and rained and rained! Our "new" pond began to fill and our cattle have had a good source of water ever since! The timing of the whole project was perfect. We are continually thankful for Richard's job so well done. May your memories give you comfort through this lonely time. Ellis and Winifred Standing

Cheryl and Richard, I know today starts a long journey of saying good bye to your father. Mom and dad spent a lot of time with your folks. As did I at your home. We are unable to attend, as dad is in the hospital in North Kansas City and Larry's sister is having surgery today for cancer. My best wishes, thoughts and prayers to all the family. Dodie
