We did not have the honor and privilege of personally knowing Rafael but Gwen and Frank (our daughter and son-in-law) speak of the kind, generous, respectful young man Rafael was. Although blood may have not made us family it always felt as though we were because of how close and how long i grew up knowing Ralf. There was never a dull moment being among his presence and i am more than grateful for all our memories together. Dearest Julie,
Although I've never met you, you have been on my heart every waking minute this week. I did meet your absolutely beautiful son in La Jolla last year -- and I was struck by both of your boys -- they were so polite...perfectly well-mannered and hilariously funny! You have the kind of young men that every mother hopes and prays her own boys become. I know. Rafael must have made your heart swell with pride and joy on many, many occasions. Hold on tight to those precious memories, the gifts that your handsome son left and would want his mama to find comfort in now and in the days ahead.
I just want you to know that in addition to the gigantic, warm, loving family that are grieving with you, there are other mommys of boys who are touched by the enormity of your pain. I didn't have the opportunity of knowing you son personally but I knew him thru my grandsons Manuel and Justin Chavez who played football at McCurdy with him. Justin also worked with him this past summer at the restaurant and both have nothing but good thoughts of him. He was a star football player and now he's on the Lord's team. I am sure they play football in heaven too.

I will never forget yesterday when Peter called me at work to tell me the sad news- he told me "Mom- my big brother Rafael died, he was shocked".
