Biography


Merline was born December 13, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa to Merle J. and Alma G. (Pasi) Underwood. She attended Lincoln High School and later married Roy E. Nichols in Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1992. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Floyd V., Carolyn, Dwayne M. and Harold L. Underwood, and a brother-in-law, Ted Clemens. For many years Merline was a minister for the Church of God of Prophesy pasturing in Beloit WI, Missouri Valley and Winterset. She was instrumental in reviving a congregation in Davenport and organizing churches in Ottumwa and Des Moines. At the time of her death she was a member of the Church of God in Des Moines. When not ministering to her many congregations she enjoyed gardening and loved bird watching. She is survived by two daughters, Marlene Bortz of Oklahoma City, OK; Mary Faith (Tim) Reames of Winterset; a son, David E. Nichols, Sr. of Louisville, KY; a sister, Eleanor Clemens of Gardner, KS; six grandchildren (Mark Chapman, Tammy Carter, Juanita Willingham, David Nichols Jr., Barbara Norton and Jacob V. Doran), many great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Marjory Underwood of Winterset and Verna Underwood of Indianola.

Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday (One hour prior to services), November 19, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare
