Mary Kaye Murphy Blickenderfer

Mary Kaye Murphy Blickenderfer

Biography

Mary Kaye Murphy Blickenderfer, a resident of Taos, NM for over 48 years passed away on June 6, 2013. Born and raised in Gallup, NM, Mary Kaye attended Gallup schools, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1956. She received her bachelors degree in Music Education from St. Mary College in Leavenworth, KS in 1960 and her MME from Northern Arizona University in 1971. After four years of teaching in Kansas, Mary Kaye moved back to NM where she was employed by the Taos Municipal School District as the music teacher in Grades K-6, for 37 years, retiring in 2002. She also taught private piano lessons, continuing this practice even in retirement. Music was her passion and over the years, she taught herself how to play the mandolin, the guitar, and the harp. Her annual Christmas pageants at the elementary school were legendary, proof of the hours she invested trying to choreograph and select musical numbers that were unique and special to each of her classes. During her years at Taos Elementary, she met and married fellow teacher and administrator, David Blickenderfer on October 26, 1985, and the two settled in Ranchos de Taos. During her career, she was a Life Member of Phi Kappa Phi Sorority.

Mary Kaye is preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Jimmy Murphy, four siblings, Jimmy, Billy, Deanie and Larry Murphy. She is survived by her husband, David, two cats, five sisters, Peggy Murphy of Deming, NM, Pat Tomljanovich of El Paso, TX, Dorothy Spezze of Leawood, KS, Barbara Dawes of Manhattan, KS, Frances Coody of Edmond, OK, two brothers-in-law, Ralph Spezze and Carl Coody, 16 nieces and nephews, three of which were Godchildren as well as many other relatives and friends.

Public Visitation was held on June 8, 2013 at Rivera Chapel. Funeral Mass followed at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church with interment at the Jesus Nazareno Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of St. Mary, 4100 S. 4th Street, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Mary Kaye's

I remember the summer of 1950 when 12-year-old Mary Kaye got so sick at a 4th of July family picnic at McGaffey Lake and Recreation area in the Zuni Mountains near Gallup and was bedridden the rest of that summer. No one could figure out what was wrong, even the doctors. Finally, Dr. Accardi hospitalized her for observation and further tests. Mary Kaye turned out to have all the symptoms of leukemia -- an acute or chronic disease characterized by an abnormal number of white blood cells in the tissues and bloodstream. But even the known treatment of penicillin shots every 3 hours and numerous blood count tests did little to pinpoint the exact illness or help eliminate her symptoms. Her condition became so serious that one of the nuns who worked in the children's part of the hospital pulled our mother aside and told her the Lord was going to ask a big sacrifice of her! You can imagine the effect that whispered comment had on Mom!

Now, it just so happened that the traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima came through Gallup during this time and Mom
gathered all the family together and marched us up to church to pray for Mary Kaye. Not content with that brief visit to Mary, Daddy went up to the hospital afterwards and physically carried Mary Kaye out to the car and took her to the church to pray and touch the famous statue of Our Lady. When he learned of this, Dr. Accardi was furious with Dad and told him in no uncertain terms that if anything happened to Mary Kaye, it was on his head!

The Murphys have always believed that the faith of our parents -- and the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima -- miraculously cured Mary Kaye. Within days, her blood test results got better and within a week, she was back home, still bedridden, but regaining a little bit of strength every day. Mary Kaye was given a reprieve of almost 63 years before being called to Our Lord on June 6, 2013. We are so grateful for the time He allowed her to be with us!

Mr. Blickenderfer and family my most heartfelt sympathy in the passing of Mrs. "Murphy" Blickenderfer. I was a first grader when she began as music teacher at Taos Elementary. As a fifth grader I sang a solo in one of her famous Christmas pagents! I always admired her peppy and happy spirit as her red flipped hair bounced as she walked. My memories of school are such beautiful ones because she added music to each of the years I spent in Taos Elementary. She was a bright spot in my life. Her smile will always be remembered and the joy she brought to so many through her influence and love of music is legend. I know she is an angel with golden wings!!! Blessings and Love, Mrs. "Murphy" till we have the joy of listening to you playing the piano once again.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Ms. Murphy. She was a wonderful teacher and friend. As six-year-olds and throughout our time at the elementary school in El Prado, we were in awe of her beauty and energy. She taught from her heart and made every child feel loved. Yes, her music programs were wonderful. I remember learning to sing Christmas carols and looking foward to singing them year after year. I remember her walk and her beautiful red hair in a flip that bounced as she walked around. We were lucky to have her in Taos. RIP!!
