Marion Binkley Kalmon

Biography

Marion Binkley Kalmon, 88, of Taos, died October 30, in the arms of her family and in the good care of the nursing staff of Plaza de Retiro. Born September 19, 1920, Marion grew up in Colorado Springs and Nashville, Tenn., the youngest daughter in an academic household. Her father, William C. Binkley, a professor of history, was one of the eminent historians of the American Southwest. Her older sister, Loraine Binkley Mooney, was a librarian and active member of the Taos community until her death in 2007. Marion married Edmond H. Kalmon, Jr., who practiced radiology in Oklahoma City, where they raised their four children. She is survived by her children Winn Kalmon (and partner Fred Saunders) of Taos, Ted Kalmon (and wife Topaz) of Glendale, Calif., Stevan Kalmon of Denver, and Julia Kalmon (and partner Victor Chan Garcia) of Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, as well as by grandson Chad Wilson of Conway, Ark., great-grandson Elijah Wilson of Mountainburg, Ark., and niece Barbara Mooney Underwood Cota of Taos.
Marion spent many years in northwest Arkansas on Domani Ranch, where she raised generations of Australian Shepherd dogs. When she moved to Plaza de Retiro in 1998, she was accompanied by Callie and Beau, beloved canine companions. To honor her memory and her love for dogs, the family requests contributions be made to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter in Taos.

To the Family of Marion,

My sincere sympathy to all of you on the loss of your Mother Marion. I have such fond memories of Marion. I can still hear that laughter of Marions as she visited us in the office. I know that she is happy to be with Beau and Callie once again. What a wonderful woman Marion was.
