“Adiosito, Leo Quintana, Longtime Taos Educator”
I was very saddened to hear that longtime Taos Educator Leo Quintana had passed on. I worked with Leo for almost 25 years at Enos Garcia Middle School throughout the 80’s and 90’s. He was an old-school educator, strong on discipline, and gave many Taos youth a strong foundation in basic skills and extremely strong skills in math.
Some students didn’t like his strict disciplinarian approach. But year after year, older students would return to his class and thank him for what he had taught them years before. Leo was no-nonsense. And his students learned.
Leo, to me, was a true Taoseno. Some people now believe that if you live in Taos, you’re a Taoseno. But I think Leo epitomized what a true Taoseno is all about. I used Leo as a “litmus test” for newcomers. If they found Leo authentic, down-to earth, and real, with something to teach, then I gave the newcomer a good chance of lasting in Taos. If they found him crass, politically incorrect, or too blunt and honest, I figured they wouldn’t last in Taos long.
I always felt Leo was born about a century too late. He seemed happiest when he was out near his cabin in Valle Escondido on horseback. When I brought the first personal computer into the Taos Schools back in 1982, Leo wasn’t impressed. But he adapted. When he needed help with a computer or VCR I’d show up at his house and help him out. And when my daughter’s horse needed shoeing, he’d be out to my house in no time to help me out.
But perhaps what I remember most about Leo was that everyday he’d make me laugh. Never would a day pass without a joke from Leo. While most teachers would greet me with a “Como amanaciste?”, Leo would always greet me with a hearty “Orale!” and then pull me aside to tell me one of his “chistes verdes (colorados.)” Yeah, they weren’t politically correct, but the jokes fit Leo and I found them extremely funny.
So, I won’t forget Leo. While his many students will remember their classroom ex

Mr. Quintana was my 6th grade teacher. I remember making Christmas Wreaths out of plastic bags, and Mr. Quintana would spray paint them for us. He was one of my favorite teachers. I will always remember him. May God bless you and your family in this sad time.
