John J. Saiz Jr.
March 20th, 1943 - July 17th, 2017
John J. Saiz Jr., 74, lifetime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico and retired lieutenant of the Santa Fe Fire Department of 20 years, died the late evening of July, 20, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born March 20, 1943, the beloved son of Juan Jose Saiz Sr. and Melinda Ortiz Saiz, both deceased. Survived by older brother Benjamin N. Saiz and children Dominic, Erika and Tammy Paschel with lifelong friend Yolanda Borrego Paschel, Aunt Lucille Trujillo, Aunt Bernadette Sena and godson Peter Ortega and wife Annette Ortega, caregivers of John, and many cousins and friends. Survived also by his "adopted" father and mother, James and Erneda Salazar, and their children, his "adopted" sisters Elizabeth Wray and Michelle Lucas. Preceded in death by Uncle Jose and Aunt Isabella Ortiz, Uncle Alfonso and Aunt Annie Ortiz, and Uncle Bouncer Sena. John graduated in 1962 from Saint Michael’s High School, served as an EMT, firefighter, and a fire and arson investigator for the City of Santa Fe Fire Department from 1967 to 1987. John also worked for the State of New Mexico Fire Marshal’s Office, before retiring a second time from Los Alamos National Labs as a fire protection engineer. John was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Retired Firefighters Association, and the Santa Fe Elks Lodge #460, a supporter and fan of Notre Dame Football, the Denver Broncos, and the San Francisco Giants. Honoring John for his last firecall, at his request, his pallbearers and friends include Art Benavidez (honorary), John Esquibel, Carlos Gallegos, David Gomez, Frank Jimenez, Peter Ortega, Jimmy Salazar (honorary), and Vicente Vigil. His son Dominic has made capital contributions to the University of Notre Dame for The Campus Crossroads Project in John’s honor for his lifelong devotion to Our Lady’s University and the sacrifices he made to send his son there for higher education. In lieu of flowers, please make donations for cancer research to the T.J. Martell Foundation or the other organizations John supported above. Called to be with his Family in Heaven, John’s friendship, generosity, faith, humility, and most of all, his kindness will be missed.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Monday, July 24, 2017 at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Santuario. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Father Dennis Garcia will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Rosario Cemetery
