He was never aware of how much his class at F.I.U. changed my life. It gave me a lot of confidence at a moment where I had just arrived in the U.S. and was very insecure. Later I went on to get a Ph.D. myself. Eternally grateful.

Dr. Lidia V. Tuttle published a tribute .

I was saddened to read in Sunday's Miami Herald the news of Dr. Joel Gottlieb's death. I am writing to express how thankful I am that Joel was my professor in several courses at FIU, from 1981 to 1983. He was at my Commencement and rejoiced in my attaining my B.A. in Political Science--an early step in my academic career. Joel taught me to wrestle with issues and not accept simple answers, to dig deeper, to ask hard questions. I can see him now, asking me simply: and what else? and so what? How fitting to remember him on Sunday, Earth Day 2012, for he was so passionate about the environment and public policy, about the public good and individual responsibility. In his quiet, deliberate, thoughtful ways he passed on that passion to his students, and I was honored to be among them.

Linda and family: Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this sad time. Meeting Naomi's father and you the two times we had the pleasure, we have such good memories of the visit at Christmas in 2004 in Chandler and then of course Mark and Naomi's beautiful wedding and so wonderful to see Joel walk Naomi up the path at the Country Club. We were all so proud to be a part of her family. Linda our hearts are breaking for you and know that Sam and I will be comforted by those times. Joel was a good and nice man and we enjoyed him so. God Bless you family. Love Ellen and Sam

Linda, John and I were saddened to learn of Joel's passing. The two of you have been extremely courageous. I will surely miss seeing his beautiful smile when meeting him out on the "walks" he took with Bodie. Whenever you feel up to it, let's have lunch....
Much love, Judy Crouch
