Biography


Jean Gillespie, 90, of Winterset, died March 16, 2012 at the Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 19 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 18 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with family present to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery, Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset.
Jean Moss was born September 16, 1921 in San Francisco, California, the daughter of Jasper and Mary (Clauser) Moss. Jean grew up in Morgan Hill, California and attended San Jose State where she received her B.A. in Physical Education. She taught in secondary education for several years before meeting the love of her life, Thomas Leo Gillespie, Jr., an Iowa farm boy stationed in California. The couple met at a dance and ultimately married on December 29, 1945 in Los Gatos, CA. Somehow Leo convinced her to move back to Winterset where the couple raised their family and lived the remainder of their lives.
Jean was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset and PEO. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Lions Club, Thursday Guild and enjoyed playing cards in several bridge groups.
Jean is survived by her children, Thomas M. Gillespie of Cedar Rapids; Mary E. Youngkin of Salt Lake City, UT; Daniel F. Gillespie and his wife, Marcy of Glen Allen, VA; and two grandchildren, Devin and Logan Gillespie both of Richmond, VA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in June of 2000; and her siblings, Katherine, Vera, Bess and Stanton.
