George Hilliard Ewing

Biography


George Hilliard Ewing passed away on October 9, 2017 and was born April 14, 1927 to William Ross and Ruth Jean (Hilliard) Ewing in Holly, Colorado. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1932 and then to Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Denver North High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Army Air Force in June, 1945 and served the Air Transport Services in Goose Bay, Labrador and Thule, Greenland. George received an honorable discharge December, 1946.
George attended the University of Colorado, Denver from 1950 to 1953, Mexico City College from 1956 to 1957 and the University of Colorado from 1958 to 1960. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. In 1962 he earned a Master of Arts Degree in anthropology. In 1965 he was appointed as an instructor of anthropology at the University of Colorado. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1967 and was appointed Director of Anthropology Laboratory. From 1973 to 1981, George was Director of Museums for the State of New Mexico, and from 1979 to 1983 he was also a Cultural Affairs Officer. During his career he prompted many cultural programs and events including Indian Market.
He married Anita Trujillo (Horten) in 1989. George was proceeded in death by his father, William R. Ewing, his mother, Ruth J. Ewing, and his brothers William R. Ewing, Jr. and Robert A. Ewing. George is survived by his wife, Anita Ewing; a nephew, John Ewing; nieces Karen (Arquitt) Ewing and Barbara (Ewing) Rich; as well as grandnephews Benjamin Ewing and James Ewing and grandniece Katherine Garvey; and 8 great grandnieces and great grandnephews.
