I'll always remember Mr. Lopez He could tell the difference between a kid goofing off for the sake of goofing off and a kid that couldn't get it and was trying, and he could work through both of those situations the same way: patience, persistence, and the occasional squirt bottle. As an adult I live in Silicon Valley, CA, and we have a shortage of math and science teachers because anyone whose good at math is an engineer or an internet billionaire. If I had his gift I'd definitely be a billionaire, so I'm glad he wasn't selfish with what he had.

We are so sorry to have learned the passing of Frutoso. There are no words to express our sincere sympathy. Mr. Lopez had a unique God given gift and that was the he knew how to "TURN ON" his students in his math classroom, whether it was at Taos Middle School or at UNM-Taos. Words cannot express the sadness I felt upon hearing of your loss. My siblings and I were all students of Frutoso and have often shared stories of his strict and humorous demeanor! He had a nickname for my sister that we still tease her about (Leon Spinks)!
He truly inspired me to follow my dreams and because of him, I have a passion for Math, becoming a Statistician!

Dear Lopez Family,
I am so sorry for you loss. He will be greatly missed! He was a great teacher and a great man. I ran into a few years back, he walked up to me and ask for penicillin. We both chuckled. The private joke we both share for when he was my AP math teacher, he would take the time to help tutor students. One morning we had a pack of little mini doughnuts, about half way through we realized they had some mold on them, I was completely grossed out. He laughed said "it just some penicillin" and finished the rest of the doughnuts! He had such a great sense of humor.

Words can't express how I feel at the news of your loss! Mr. Lopez was my mentor, gave me inspiration to be the best I could be! Because of him I developed a love for numbers and eventually earned an advanced degree in Statistics (applied math). It broke my heart to hear about your husband. He taught me PreAlgebra ('77) and Algebra ('78) early on in his career. I became an engineer knowing at some point in my life I would be a math teacher like him. I have been teaching these two math classes for 11 yrs. I am the teacher I am today, because of his inspiration. I use the "exact" teaching methods he taught me. I live in Amarillo and so wanted to see him this past Christmas, but could not make it to Taos. If I had only known he was ill, I would have found a way. He has been on my mind these past years. I just wanted him to know the great impact he had on my life. Please know that a teacher can touch and inspire a child in ways you could never imagine. My condolences to you and all your family.

Mr. Frutoso Lopez was the teacher who inspired me to be a leader instead of a follower. I had just started to hang-out with the slacker crowd when I entered his class in 8th grade. He saw potential in me and made me sit in the front row. If I dared to look back at my distracting friends, when faced forward again, there would be a spray of water in my face. I can easily say I learned life lessons from Mr. Lopez. Before applying for grad school I took Math 121 while I was pregnant. He lacked pity and encouraged me to get to class extra early if I wanted a desk to write on instead of my belly. Mr. Lopez also wrote one of my recommendations for grad school. Im in my second semester of school now, and I have Mr. Lopez to thank. Mr. Frutoso Lopez was not just a teacher, but a firm and honest man. I will remember him always.

Velma I had the pleasure of meeting you a few years back and your son when he was at West Mesa High School, as I told Flavio then, if he was anything like his father then he also is a great teacher, which I believe throught him Mr Lopez will continue to teach. It's been 30 years, give or take, since I was Mr. Lopez's student. I tried calling him Frutoso once, long after leaving Taos, and it didn't feel right. He was always going to be my elder and my teacher. Mr. Lopez was tough... on all of us. He was so right to be. He helped me stand up in life, not cower. I believed in his great strength and artistry - challenging all the kids that he did. Many of us could have gone dark ways. I credit the Lopez brothers for keeping so many of us on track. Frutoso was loved, admired, respected, and irreplaceable. I'm so grateful for having been his student. May your hearts be peaceful and warm.

I am deeply and truly sorry for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Mr. Lopez was such a great man and as a teacher there were none like him. I was saddened to hear of the onset of his cancer and remembered him in my prayers. I now offer up my prayers for your family as you mourn his passing.
Mr. Lopez used to call me Ms. Quintana every time he saw me, I'd correct him and say "Mr. Lopez I'm Gallegos," He'd say "I know that, but your family is Quintana and you look Quintana, so your Ms. Quintana." It was truly amazing how he never forgot a student.

Whoever said, "...they don't make them like that anymore," could very well have been referring to Mr. Lopez. He was a class-act, who possessed the rare ability to engage even the most disinterested, angsty teenager. In my lifetime, I have met hundreds of people, and pass nearly as many each day. In Jr.high school I avoided Mr. F. Lopez like the plague. My lazy behind knew he was one of toughest teachers at Taos High. Not too long ago I had the opportunity and privilege to study Algebra with this wonderful teacher at the University level. I was right he was the toughest teacher in Taos. He was also in influential along with my dear friend Mr. Benavidez in getting my education on track. I am graduating in May with two degrees. Wish they were both here to see what their passionate life's work has produced. I am just one of a thousand stories and just one of the lives touched by these two wonderful educators.
