Biography


Elinor Walters was born September 28, 1927, in Manchester, Iowa to G. L. and Ruth (Barker) Adams. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1945 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1949. She received her Master's degree from Drake University. Mrs. Walters was a teacher of English and speech in Guthrie Center, Central City and Story City, and later worked for several years as a guidance counselor in the Winterset Schools, retiring in 1994. She is survived by three sons; Mark L. Walters of Sunland, CA, Steven A. Walters of Adel, IA, and Brian J. Walters of Aurora, IL and two grandchildren, Sam and Maggie Walters. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother and a sister. On June 17, 1951, she was married to Robert A. Walters of Guthrie Center. The couple moved to Winterset in 1959 where Mr. Walters was co-owner of Thompson-Walters Shoes (later Village Bootery). Mrs. Walters was a member and an Elder of the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset, a member of Chapter AG P.E.O., and Progressive Study Club. She was active in many civic and educational causes in Winterset through the years, and was a very active member of the Apple Tree Players.

Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., August 3, 2009 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare, Winterset.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at The First United Presbyterian Church, Winterset.

Memorial: Memorial contributions may be directed to her church or the Winterset Community Educational Foundation.

Your family & ours were intermixed on many occasions when you boys were young. Marcia & I not only baby sat for you ,but camped together in our much younger years. Our parents were great friends and enjoyed many happy times together. It meant so much for me to hear Buzz tell Maggie that Mom was her best friend. I know they are enjoying some great quality time reminiscing about the old days right now. Bob was an awesome & integral part of the family & community as well.
