Dear mom, I love and miss you so very much.

I'm sharing a story I wrote, when you left your body. For me, it was an answer to my prayers; a miracle.

"When I was a child, I watched a movie called, “Song of Bernadette”, which is about Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. It made a big impact on me and since then, I wanted to make a pilgrimage there.

Starting in 2001, my mother, Andreita (Angie) Cantú, who lived in Taos, New Mexico, suffered a mild stroke. This was followed by another mild one in 2002. In 2003, she was hit by a very powerful and debilitating stroke, which left her body half paralyzed. She was unable to speak or do anything for herself, which was very heartbreaking to see. She had always been so active in the community. No one should have to life like that.

My wife, Padmarani (Padma), has a niece that lives in Paris. Padma had attended her niece's wedding and wanted to take me for a vacation there, so in November 2008, we traveled to France. While we were there, I told my bride I wanted to travel to Lourdes on a pilgrimage and to pray for my mom. So, a couple of days before we left Paris, we took an overnight train to Lourdes. We arrived the next morning and checked into the hotel and immediately walked over to the grotto where Our Lady appeared to Saint Bernadette.

Lourdes is a beautiful city near the base of the Pyrenees Mountains, which separates France and Spain. It was off season, in November, so we were there almost all alone. We lit a candle and prayed for some time. Then we went off to eat and do some sightseeing.

Once we finished, we returned to the grotto and stayed for several hours. It was a beautiful night, with a full moon lighting the scene brightly. The night was silent except for the sound of the flowing river behind us. Flickering flames from many candles were glowing and illuminated the grotto beautifully.

I approached the grotto and pressed my face and hands onto the cold, wet rock. I closed my eyes and whispered my simple prayers and wishes to Our Lady, who resides at this sacred grotto. I opened my heart as I intimately conversed with Our Lady. I asked her to please heal my mother or take her to be with my dad. My prayers were long, heartfelt and truthful as I spoke them. I prayed for a long time; I sat down and then I got up and prayed some more. My wife, Padma, prayed too. We lost track of time. Finally we were all prayed out as it was very cold and we were tired. Our hearts were fulfilled. We turned and walked away from the grotto and stopped and admired at the beauty of the full moon and listened to the soothing sounds of the ripples on the river, as it rushed away to parts unknown to us.

We caught the train, the next morning, back to Paris and that night, we boarded our flight back to Dulles Airport in northern Virginia.

When we arrived at the airport the following morning, I turned on my cell phone and had over 20 messages…

“Ruben, where are you? We’re trying to contact you. Mom passed away!” All of my brothers and sisters called, multiple times.

I couldn’t believe it! It took a while for it to sink in but then I thought to myself that Our Lady had answered my prayers. After all, what better way of healing my mother than to take her to Heaven to be with my dad. A feeling of peace came over me.

Then, what happened next, confirmed to me that this was a miracle…

My wife telephoned to her mother, Amma Rasiah, to tell her of my mom’s passing. The conversation went something like this…

Wife: "Amma, Ruben’s mother passed away."

Silence

Wife: "Amma, did you hear me? Ruben’s mother passed away."

Silence

Wife: "Amma, Ruben’s mother passed away."

Mother-in-Law: "Yeah, yeah, I know already…"

Wife: "What? How could you know already? We just found out."

Mother-in-Law: "When I was sleeping, a voice came to me and said, “Ruben’s mother has gone to Lourdes to be with Ruben and Padma." I told the voice, this can’t be. Ruben’s mother is sick and she can’t move or go anywhere. The voice came back and said, “No, Ruben’s mother has gone to Lourdes to be with Ruben and Padma” and then I woke up”."

Wife (shocked): "When did this happen?"

Mother-in-Law: "2 nights ago."

It was the same night we were in Lourdes! Even telling this story now chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes.

We flew to New Mexico after going back home to Richmond, Virginia to gather some clothes.

At my darling mother’s Rosary and funeral services, my brothers and sisters wept, as one does when a loved one passes away. I didn’t shed tears at my mother’s passing. After my experience in Lourdes, I felt a strong sense of happiness and peace. I knew where my mother was and I knew she was peaceful and happy.

I will always be grateful to my darling and beautiful Lady of Lourdes for answering my prayers in such a wonderful and meaningful way.

That’s the story of my miracle.

I hope that someday my sons will have more children and if there is another daughter born to one of them, I am going to request that she be given the name "Lourdes", pronounced in the Spanish way as, "Lure Des", after Our Lady, who granted me this miracle for my mother...".

To all the Cantu children,
I am at a loss, for there aren't enough words to express what I felt when I heard about Angie's passing. I will forever be grateful for the beautiful hospitality that your Mom & Dad showed me,back in 1962,(I was fresh & green out of college) when they invited me to live with you while I found a place of my own. They both were beautiful people & I will hold them both in my heart & in my prayers. I still remember all the fun we had while I was with you.
With love & prayers,
Pat & Rose Martinez
