Biography

William Alan Hickman, known to most as Alan, died unexpectedly on August 6, 2017 at the age of 70.

Alan was an entrepreneur and business consultant, of Santa Fe, NM.

Alan is survived by his wife, Jan Stringer; his brother and sister in law, Peter and Barbara Hickman; his step-daughter, Jana Knowlton and husband Chad; his grandchildren, Slade Knowlton and Sloan Knowlton.

Alan was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 13, 1947 to Walter and Margaret Hickman. He was a proud graduate of Penn State. Alan traveled many places over his lifetime and shared his knowledge of business throughout many different careers that ranged from the oil industry to the restaurant industry. He met his “Perfect Love,” Jan in 2004. Early in their relationship, Alan and Jan worked to build and grow their own consulting business, where Alan coached many clients to help them “Attract Their Perfect Customers.” Alan and Jan married on July 28, 2007 and resided together in Santa Fe, NM the last 11 years. Together they built a loving marriage and a successful business that not only helped other businesses but changed people’s lives. Alan was a devoted husband and grandfather. He enjoyed working in the garden and making things beautiful in his yard. Alan was known to most as the world’s greatest cheerleader, as he always had something positive to say to his friends and clients. Alan loved sports! He read about sports, he watched sports, but most of all he enjoyed making it to Texas to watch his grandchildren play football, basketball, baseball, and track. Alan loved working with his wife Jan and “doing life” with her. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

A memorial service to honor the life of Alan Hickman is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on August 27th at the Unity Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Jan, my heart breaks for you. My you find comfort in the love we have for you and Alan.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die."

Alan has had a huge influence on my life, helping me to follow my purpose and be authentic. One time I was having a fight with my husband and asked Alan for a man's perspective. He replied "did you ask to be enlightened?" I answered, "yes." "And you wanted it quickly?" "Yes," I replied. "Then go in there and thank your husband for helping you out." I loved that advice and will always think of Alan as the light of love.
