Wildon Fickett

Biographie

Wildon Fickett, formerly of Los Alamos, NM., passed away on August 17, 2015 in Fort Collins, CO after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. He was 88 years old.

Wildon is remembered as a selfless husband and father, an avid lifetime learner, an earnest Christian and an accomplished scientist.

He was born on March 25, 1927 in Tucson Arizona. He was the first of three sons of Fred Wildon Fickett, Jr. and Ruth Marjorie Tacquard Fickett.

Wildon had a life-long interest in science. At 13, he began to assemble his laboratory at home. Numerous anecdotes of his experiments and adventures are still recounted with a chuckle by family members. As a 16-year old high school senior, Wildon competed in the national Westinghouse Scholarship Competition in Washington DC with 39 other finalists and got to meet Eleanor Roosevelt.

On May 4, 1945 Wildon married Ella Mae (Johnson) Fickett also of Tucson. Wildon and Ella Mae eventually raised five children in their 48 years of marriage.

After service in the Navy as an Aviation Electronic Technicians Mate, he was honorably discharged in June 1946. He received his B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1948 and earned a Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology three years later in 1951. The same year he began working for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory.

As a chemical physicist Wildon worked his entire adult life at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM. He published many papers as well as books that became well known in his field. Wildon was honored by being made a Fellow of the Laboratory in 1980.

After the death of his wife Ella Mae in 1993, Wildon married Inez Christensen, also of Los Alamos, N.M., on August 27, 1994.

Wildon was actively involved in Crossroads Bible Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance (formerly Trinity Bible Church) in Los Alamos.

Wildon was preceded in death by his father and mother Fred Wildon, Jr. and Ruth T. Fickett, his wife Ella Mae Fickett, and his brother Howard Fickett.
