To the family of Roderick (Rod) Vincent Manifold,
It is with profound sadness that my wife, Thedosia Mumford, my children, my aunt Dr. Helen Caldwell, my uncle Harry Marshall Sr., join you in this memorial - HOME going service.
As stated before, Rod was committed and passionate about his work at Central Virginia Health Services. His work ethic and personality had a profound impact on the staff, patients, and the host of friends of CVHS.
Rod was one of the lead people at CVHS that facilitated the naming of the new building at the center in the name of my mother, Mrs. Beulah Marshall Mumford-Wiley some years back. Rod oversaw the creation and placement of the permanent busy of my mother at CVHS for all to see and remember my mother. For this, I am eternally grateful and I will always cherish the friendship and legacy of Rod Vincent Manifold that has made my life and my family richer by our association with him and CVHS.
As a minister of the Gospel, I come also to encourage all of us today, for the Bible says, to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD, in that permanent home called Heaven.
Ps 91:1-2 He who dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, HE is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.

Like the rest, we were shocked and saddened by this sudden loss. From the Johnson Health Center family to the CVHS family and to Rod's family, our thoughts and prayers remain with you. My condolences to the family and to the CVHS family on the sudden passing of Rod Manifold. He was an incredible advocate and a tireless supporter of community health centers. I admired his tenacity and his commitment to this field. He was such a warm personality and I have been privileged to be a recipient of those legendary hugs and warm smiles. Our mutual love for our children was often the start of any conversation when we encountered each other. He often spoke fondly and with humor about his road trips with his wife and mother-in-law. He will truly be missed.

Rod was someone who embodied the entire spirit of what a community health center, and what a christian spirit, was about. He always smiled, was always ready with a hug, and always had a positive presence that made you just believe. He was truly one of a kind. I feel so honored to have been able to get to know him during the development and opening of the CFP practice. Whenever I was unsure, Rod's strength and certainty wiped away any doubts- he made me want to be a better person. Who he was has impacted so many people in such a positive way, he was a true gift. His legacy will live on through us all, though we will miss him greatly. Central Virginia will forever feel his presence and love.

Rod Manifold was bigger than life and always had a big smile planted on his face after driving at least an hour from home for a 7:30 am meeting in Hopewell. Rod was always so positive and genuinely loved Central Virginia Health Services. Although Rod is no longer with us here, his life's work will live on through the hundreds of thousands of lives that he made healthier and better. Although I did not have the pleasure of meeting Demetria, I know that she must have been quite a lady because we all know that behind every good man is an even better woman. On behalf of John Randolph Foundation, thank you Nadia, Devon and Nigel for sharing your father and mother with the people that were the recipients of their generosity and work through the years.

As all I am saddened and stunned that Rod is not with us any longer. I had limited interpersonal interactions with him, but when I did, I left either smiling or with greater understanding that made sense to me. I would be smiling because he'd either given me a hug making me feel appreciated, or he was being silly (e.g. I can clearly see him dressed as Elvis). I was proud of the value he placed on showing that he valued staff (e.g. approving the many many prizes and gifts at the holiday party), and personally coming around to all the sites and taking time to chat. I of course would jump at the opportunity to ask him a multitude of questions about the political situation or the organization (and of course lobby him about growing behavioral health), and I appreciated that he would answer me, he didn't avoid my question, but took time to explain the history either of the policy, the organization, or the funding. I've felt fortunate to be at CVHS, but now more than ever I realize that much of that can be attributed to Rod's leadership and dedication to serving communities and treating staff well and fairly. I hope that I can be a part of continuing his legacy. He was a good leader, a good boss, and a good man. We were so lucky to have hi m.

I was deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of Rod, his beloved wife and mother-in-law. While he can never be replaced, he will live forever in our hearts and in our memories. Rod was one of the first people I met when I came to work in Virginia 19 years ago. I will remember his smile, his caring and his ability to be a visionary in setting up Community Health Centers where they were needed . I will remember his kindness, his joy,his stories. I have known Rod for 20 years, with that being said I have to say a lot of memories have been made, and several thoughts come to mind, Rod had an endless energy, his passion and commitment, not only to staff but to what a community health center is all about were astounding. He was a true believer in the human spirit and dedicated to making health care a priority for all walks of life. His belief in me and all staff, that we could get the job done was boundless. The emptiness that I felt when I heard the tragic news was palpable. It was then that I realized how much Rod meant to me. Each time I think of him not being around I feel sad. However, I quickly think how fortunate I was to have known him. My loss, as a friend and colleague, pails in comparison to the family's loss. All of us here at Horizon Health Services extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Rod. We cannot fathom the pain over this great loss. As I read the kind messages thus far, one thing remains abundantly clear about this kind man, he cared about all. I first met Rod in 1988, when he oversaw the Monette Users Group meetings. My great uncertainties as a newcomer to that scene were overcome simply due to his style, his approach of kindness, humor and keeping things in proper perspective. Over the many years, although I didn't see him as much as others, he always greeted me with that smile of his and asked,"where's my hug?" That sincere caring for other people was his trademark, he made the world a much better place. Our prayers for the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Rod's passing. He gave me my first job and mentored me through kindness and example. He was a tireless ambassador for community health who impacted the lives of thousands. Like everybody else on Monday, I was shocked to learn about Rod's passing. I think many have commented on the kind of man and leader that Rod was and truly embodied. Others have commented about the friendship they shared with him. And others still have commented on his sweet family and as to the level of devotion he had to them/for them. I would like to simply share and affirm that Rod treated everybody equally. Didn't matter if you were an MD or an executive or just a worker bee. Rod made you feel like you mattered and his level of graciousness often assured you that you did. Thank you for that, Rod. You were a true gentleman and we will miss your leadership, your infectious personality and your civility in an often uncivil climate. Rod was a friend to so many people, and I am so very honored to have known him and learned from him over the years. He was always generous with his time, and upbeat and optimistic. I am still just stunned by the loss, and extend my deepest condolences to his family, the CVHS community and all his friends. This is just a stunning loss for us all, including the thousands of people he helped get the care they needed all across Virginia.

I, along with many, are so saddened to hear of such tragic loss. Loss to his family, friends and loss to affordable health care. As County Administrator of Buckingham County I have always enjoyed working with Rod with any issues regarding the Central Virginia Health Center, and even our conversations regarding additional expansions to other underserved areas. Rod always had that smile, that kind of smile that made me feel comfortable and at ease which made business issues a lot less stressful. On a personal level Rod expressed such touching sympathy to me and my family with the loss of our daughter as he knew the loss of a child. Also on a personnel level, I LOVED his joking with me. My last encounter with Rod was about a month ago at the Health Center. We sit in the waiting room and talked about our ages, how long we have been doing what we have been doing and how we like what we do. We even talked about when we thought we may decide to stop working and he said he loved what he was doing and didn't expect to stop any time soon. Rod will be greatly missed by so many. My sincere sympathy to his family, coworkers and friends. God's blessings for some peace and comfort.

One of my favorite Rod memories comes from a photo that was stuck on a bulletin board at CVCHC for years--may be there still, although I am not. It was of Rod mopping the health center floor with a big yellow janitor's bucket by his side. To me, this typified Rod's approach to his job--no pretense about tackling any issue as long as it led to a better health center--and demonstrated the sort of inspiring human touch that really comes from the heart. Everything about Rod seemed genuine (and Ms Lepro's reference to Rod's recommendation of "Man's Search for Meaning" is no surprise.) A remarkable man who I will miss.

It has been a pleasure to have known Rod for the many years he has worked and served in the Community Health Center world. Even with his busy schedule he found time to serve on the Virginia Community Healthcare Association Board since 1992 and on the CCNV Board since it's inception. Rod's wisdom and sound advice was always appreciated by the members of those Boards. My best memories of Rod were through our work with NACHC and promoting the Virginia Community Health Centers. He will be missed in Virginia for his continued dedication and commitment to his work, but even more as a friend. Our prayers are for Rod and his family.

I feel lost without him here at CVCHC-I feel like no one is at the helm of our wonderful organization. He always had a smile for me whenever he was in our pharmacy- working in medication assistance he would always say to me" Deb, I got this pill....." I would jokingly say- no Rod you don't qualify- sorry! To say that he will be missed is an understatement. Our work family will forever miss his smiling face, his positive attitude and unending devotion to his employees.

I know that the grief, pain, and loss that we are feeling does not compare to what you are going through. Your dad was truly one of a kind. It didn't matter if you were an employee, patient, or stranger, he had a way about him that made you felt comfortable, that you matter, that you were somebody, that he truly cared about you. Many years ago, at one of our Association's conferences in Virginia, Rod brought along his family. While Rod spent all day in meetings, his family spent time at the beach. One day, during a break, I looked out one of the windows in the foyer that overlooked the beach. I saw Rod, in a suit, dress shoes and necktie flapping in the wind walking across the sand to meet up with his family. Oh how he loved his family and spoke of them often with great love and affection.

Rod had great presence! He filled the room with his smile, laughter, and yes, his statue; most of all his wisdom, immense knowledge, love and long history of advocacy for healthcare. Rod spoke to everyone without hesitation, his laugh was infectious beyond belief, and his comical way of looking at things always brightened everyone's days. I'd never seen Rod without a smile on his face. I'll never forget the moments I shared with him at CVHS. You will be greatly missed. Rod was always an inspiration to me and I will miss him so much. A smile and caring words for everyone he came in contact with. He had so much love for his wife and family. Rod and Demetria left their children a great legacy on leadership, love and caring for others. I pray that God will comfort them and they may find peace in knowing how much their parents loved them.

I'll never forget when I first started with CVHS & was told Rod was coming to our site. I was so nervous, I mean, he was the CEO. When he got there I was so relieved to know he was so down to earth. He introduced himself to me & asked me how'd I liked working there so far. Every time I saw him, I was greeted with a huge smile. I also always look forward to his costumes for the banquet in November. He is definitely going to be missed. I will continue to keep his family & our CVHS family lifted up in prayer.

Whenever Rod would come by to CHCRR he always had a smile on his face and always made everyone feel good and inspired us all to do our best for our community. My heart is so heavy over the loss of Rod and his family. It seems so unreal that he will no longer be walking through the health center speaking to everyone. He was the guy that treated everyone the same regardless of your position at work. He came up and told all of us Happy New Year on the last day of work before New Years. At our Christmas party at CVCHC, he always told us how proud he was of our team and the dedication we put into the care of our patients'. He was just that guy that always had a smile and always made you feel appreciated. I didn't have the privilege of knowing his wife and mother in law but I can only imagine how much brighter Heaven is today. My heart goes out to everyone especially their loved ones and I pray that God will give you all the strength to get through this tragedy. CVHS will never be the same as we lost an incredible soul and his family yesterday. Rest in Heavenly peace angels. Our hearts are broken and we will miss you so very much.

My heart goes out to the Manifold family during this difficult time. Rod was a wonderful man who cared deeply about the work of community health centers, patients, and staff. I don't think I ever saw Rod without a smile on his face. He will be missed tremendously. May God comfort the Manifold family, friends, and CVHS. I’m in shock. I was just thinking of Rod the other day when Pres. Trump put in motion the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. I know how hard Rod fought to help people in small towns and rural areas have access to quality healthcare. Rod regaled me with the story of the visit paid by First Lady Michelle Obama to his center. He was in 7th Heaven. Now Rod is in actual Heaven. I know Rod was called to testify before Congress on the issues faced by rural healthcare providers. Rod was a careful driver. So I cannot imagine what happened. Please forgive my ramblings as I am in shock. Rod was my swim coach at the YMCA in Chicago, camp director at Camp Pinewood in Michigan, mentor and lifelong friend. In my adolescent years, Rod helped me figure out who I am and how I want to lead my life. Few others have had such an impact on me. Thank you for sharing this tragic, tragic news. The world is worse for his loss. My condolences to his family and Virginia friends.

I can't find the words yet to describe the emptiness we feel at this loss, but only know that it doesn't compare to the loss for the family.
