Biographie
Robert L. Bob Barnes, 89 a resident of Los Alamos White Rock, NM, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2015. He was born on January 21, 1926, in Athens, Alabama to Susie Rouse and Luther S. Barnes. He married JoAnn Boyd on September 6, 1947. Together, they adopted two children: Susan Kaye in 1957, and Robert Ray in 1961. They provided a wonderful home in which to grow up, filled with love, fun, and compassionate guidance.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Rouse Barnes, father, Luther S. Barnes, son, Robert R. Barnes, sisters, Ruby King and Reba McMeans.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Barnes of Los Alamos, NM, daughter Susan Oakes (David) of Allen, TX, grandson, Nate Oakes (Rhiannon Whinery Oakes) of San Diego, CA, granddaughter Bethany Oakes (Bradford Fults) of Austin, TX, grandson, Jordan Oakes (Nicole) of Plano, TX, granddaughter, Angela Hurt (Joshua) of Reno, NV, granddaughter, Christine Barnes of Mesquite, TX, nephews, Jimmy King and Tommy King of Decatur, AL, and numerous other family members in the Decatur, AL area. He is also survived by 3 great grandchildren.
Bob served in the Navy in WWII. He retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1985 with 35 years of service there, mostly at S-Site. He had served as a Deacon at The Christian Church of Los Alamos. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Los Alamos. He was passionate about cars (particularly Ford Mustangs, a love he shared with his son), and he took pride in fixing engines, doing body work, repainting and helping to sell a multitude of vehicles over the years. Everyone knew they would get the best possible job and fair deal with Bob. He was an avid fisherman, a beloved father and grandfather, a loyal and helpful neighbor and friend to many and dedicated caregiver to his bride of 68 years JoAnn. He will be greatly missed!
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 1:30 pm at The Christian Church in Los Alamos, 92 East Road, Los Alamos, NM 87544. Burial will follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Diabetes Association or to The Christian Church in Los Alamos.
