Janet Wilson Colt
April 25, 1948 – April 29, 2016

After a five-year battle with cancer, Janet died in peace and without pain. Her family and friends will remember her ever-positive attitude, can do spirit, and love of life in face of the cancer challenge. There is now a feeling of relief and closure. But the sense of loss is great.

Janet was a success at everything she undertook. An honor student in high school, she later attended Auburn University in Alabama, pledging the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and pursuing a degree in Mathematics. In the years immediately after college, Janet supported her military husband as he completed flight training around the country and pursued a multi-year assignment in Spain. There she honed her skill in Spanish and learned to shop successfully in multiple languages! Their last Navy duty station was at the University of Oklahoma where Jan became a Sooners fan; the Colts would escape occasionally to Santa Fe for its Spain-like culture, outdoor sports and cooler weather.

Concerned that she completed only two years at Auburn (she married before finishing the degree), she went on to a successful career in bank management in Los Angeles. Starting as a secretary at City National Bank (“Bank of the Stars,” no less) in Beverly Hills, she rose quickly to Senior Vice President and Controller. She also managed the bank’s regional data processing center, a large profit center. The Colt’s finally moved to Santa Fe in 1992 when Janet decided to “retire” to pursue volunteer work with various non-profit entities, including three homeowners associations and the Southwestern Association for Indian Art (Indian Market). Loving Santa Fe, she was an avid alpine skier, hiker, duffer fly fisherman, cook extraordinaire, gardener, and dear friend to many. She was also heavily involved in the Bear Creek community on the Conejos River in Southern Colorado where she and husband own a log home.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Kropp Wilson and Leonard Carey Wilson, Jr., who resided in Decatur, Alabama until their deaths.

Janet is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Stockton Beekman Colt, Santa Fe, NM. Other immediate relatives include her sister Margaret Anne Wilson, Birmingham, AL, her brother Leonard Carey Wilson III, Goshen, IN, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Her husband Stockton and the family wish to thank the Mayo Clinic, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Christus St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center and its exceptional team of palliative doctors and nurses, and especially the professional and compassionate staff of Ambercare Hospice who made Janet comfortable and provided perspective for her spouse.

Janet’s ashes will be interred in the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida according to her wishes. A celebration of her life and her loving friendships with people worldwide will take place in July at the Chapel of Light at the Rivera Family Funeral Home in Santa Fe.
