Jackie and I were great friends and Sandie baseball teammates. I saw him only once after high school, at either the 40th or 45th reunion of our class. Somehow he found out I was in Amarillo and called and asked if he could go with my wife, Larra, and I to the reunion. He came to Larra's mother's home and we had our own private reunion for awhile. He was fun to be around and to play with when we were in high school. He had a great mischievous spirit. He chewed tobacco while playing baseball. Once, when Jackie was batting, Sam Crain, our usual umpire for home games, called a particularly high pitch a strike. Jackie never moved from beside the plate, but turned his head and spit a stream of tobacco juice right between Crain's legs. Crain jumped back and came storming down the third place line toward our coach, Sam Pecchia, demanding that he straighten Jackie out. I have sent an e-mail to the Sandie Spirit, the AHS alumni newsletter, about two home runs Jackie hit while playing for the Sandies. One, in Gold Sox Park in Amarillo bounced up, not down, after hitting the center field fence, and the other in a bi-district game in El Paso must have been at least 500 feet long and set us on the path to a 13-5 win and a trip to the state tournament in 1953. Jackie will always be one of my warmest memories.

I am happy that you are out of pain. We will miss you but we have wonderful memories of camping with the bears, fishing, horseback riding and just simple family love and fun. It was a blessing to have been part of your life.
