Forever In Our Hearts

Biografía

How does someone verbally describe such a beautiful woman like Mrs. Shirley Nolan? The answer is, you can't, but you can attempt to share all of the amazing things that she gave, and shared with those that crossed her path. Who she was at her core. What she meant to others that came into her presence, even if just for a moment. First a little about her. She was born on September 30th, 1935, in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad & Tobago. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harold and Doris Cachie, the sister of 10 siblings, the mother of 5 children, and the Grandmother to 11 Grandchildren. She was the oldest of her siblings and the matriarch of the Cachie family after her mother’s passing.

She was a loving, beautiful classy woman. She was a God fearing woman, that knew how to pray. There were so many special characteristics about Shirley. First, she was extremely talented. After coming to the United States in hopes of a better future for her family, and working in the corporate world as a Telephone Operator for Marble in NY, she went on to pursue her passion and dreams of becoming a professional Doll Marker, Master Tailor, Interior Designer, Quilter, and Jewelry Maker. She accomplished her professional goals and passed them down to her children and grandchildren. She was like a second mother to many. She meant so many different things to so many different people.

When you were sick, she was the person you could call to hear a sweet calming voice on the other end with a West Indian remedy waiting for you. She was a library of knowledge. Her imagination was extraordinary. She could look at a something, and go and figure out how to make it herself. And she would. She was resourceful. She loved hats, and fine things. She had a giving heart. She always put others first and herself last. She loved people and all races. She was an amazing cook. And anyone who really knew her knew that she was the “Queen B” of gadgets.

She always sacrificed, and never complained and she was always grateful for what she had. She was super strong. The only time she was ever seen crying was at her husband’s funeral. She lived an amazing full life. Filled with love, hope, determination, and a giving heart. She was a Regal woman; A woman of grace, love and compassion. She was Ms. Shirley Nolan. A woman who touched many.

I'm saddened by the death of Ms. Shirley. I didn't get the blessings of meeting her yet but I'm holding on to Jehovah God's promise. This is the beginning and I am thankful to know that a time will come when my children will get to meet and know their Great Grandmother. Rest easy Shirley. And to the family and friends out there, cry but don't weep. Lookup Revelations 21:3- 4 for encouragement. God bless.

Thank you Grandma Shirley Nolan because of you, I am able to build a legacy with hard work and commitment and the fruits of your labor. You came to America almost 50 years ago with dreams of making a better life for your kids (my fathers and aunties) during a time woman of color from another country aspiring for more was given more closed doors than open opportunity but you worked through it. Your grandchildren and great grandchildren and beyond will have the American dream now so, again thank you, I love you, and may you Rest In Peace

I met Shirley at Capon Springs, WV, while on a quilting retreat. We had a lot of laughs - we connected and I had a friend for life. I'm missing her already.
