Another picture of my dear brother growing up in the mean streets of Lahore. He was always a daredevil from the time he learned how to ride a bike. May Allah swt bless him and his family.

Ali is in heaven, probably waiting for me so that I can join him and we can race each other.

My heart is heavy, but I will be coming to you soon Ali bhai.

I'm heartbroken. To the Ayub family, I give my condolences and my prayers..
I knew Ali as a man who had a happy,, adventurous, yet caring soul. Samuel Butler one wrote that "To die, one must not only forget, but be forgotten, and he who is not forgotten is not dead."

I won't forget you, Ali.. I will continue to remember you as I always have...as a soul whose incandescence would always brighten a room, and was a beacon of positivity for all you knew. I knew you for four years and my only regret was not being able to know you longer. However I will continue to keep your memory alive within me.

Farewell, buddy, and may the wind be always at your back

Well, I've been trying my hardest to not think about Ali. I've spent the last few days cracking jokes and trying to divert my mind towards other things. It worked for a few days, but here I am back again. I'm here thinking. Thinking about whether our lives truly matter. Thinking about whether others should value your life, If you don't value your own. A huge rush of thoughts are overwhelming me.

I think about Ali. And I think that perhaps I have no idea how to handle grief. It feels comfortable to think that he's still out there somewhere in the world doing his thing. Then reality snaps at me and I can't help but think, what good it does for me. I read his old comments on youtube without trying to and get instantly reminded about what happened. I'm not sure If the shock has worn off or whether I am incapable of realizing shock.

I suppose I need more time. However, when my mind drifts I get a heavy feeling on my chest and heart. They say time heals, and that's the only solution I can invest in at the moment. I can only depend on Allah swt. Ali's death has impacted me in so many ways, that I can not even describe it. How can I say it was good or bad, when the results are so morbid that I feel sick.

I just miss him being around. I will have to have faith in God and keep pushing on. I know Ali would never want me to feel this way, so I try gather strength from his awesome personality. I guess it just becomes hard after a while, but I don't want to disappoint him. Thanks to Ali, there are so many children getting an opportunity for education that would have never had the chance. Allah swt will sprout fragrant flowers around his grave.

I had first met Ali Hassan when , as a little boy, he had come to meet his grand parents Mr and Mrs Abul Hassan in Lahore. But where I really met him was when I was staying in his home in Washington DC when he had stating grown up into a fine young man. On the very first day of our meeting he broke the age barrier of forty years between us and came across to me as a person with a body in USA but a heart and soul in Pakistan. I saw in him the countless young Pakistani youth who feel more passionately about Pakistan than those of them who live here. Despite the fact that he had lived all his young life in USA he wanted to go to Pakistan and live there. He spoke about it comfortably. As if he had already experienced life in Pakistan. He was fascinated when I told him about Chitral. How people there were still living a happy life closer to nature. Anything I mentioned to him about Pakistan would fas&cinate him. His light brown eyes would brighten up and the dimple on his left cheek would show up even more. Young men like Ali Hassan are the real hope for us to get our beloved country back on track. Sadly he is no more. My biggest regret is that he was not able to see Chitral. He would have surely loved to be here as much as we would have loved to have him with us to feel his warmth whenever we spoke of our country and our people. May God bless you and keep you in peace dearest Ali Hassan.

Ali was a kind and gentle soul. Above that, he was very intelligent and articulate. Among us friends, he was the absolute most patriotic Pakistani. I say this because with all the flaws that Pakistan has, he always represented our nation with fierce patriotism and goodwill. He never involved himself with the negatives. He had a will and aspiration that surpassed most people in this day and age. He even had a sticker of the flag of Pakistan on his bike. He also had another sticker '786' on his bike which translates to Bismillah or ie (In the name of Allah swt).

He was a very sharp guy, and always so polite. I give thanks to Mehmood uncle and Mansoora aunty for raising him this way. He was a star amongst all of us Pakistanis growing up in the US that didn't have many role models to follow. A cool guy that we all loved and respected. I used to chat and talk to him on the phone for over 7 years. We even scheduled meetings to visit one another, but could never get it done due to busy schedules. I regret that so much. He was my brother and will always be my older brother. I will never stop thinking about him. The best thing about Ali was that he never let the world change him, rather he was one of the few daring people that wanted to change the world. I miss him so much. I send all of his family so much love. To me, he was flesh and blood and I will never forget him. He will always be alive in my heart.

Ali welcomed me into the family with open arms, he had an amazingly relaxed but engaging demeanour, maintaining such ease of presence regardless of the situation. Ali had an ability to talk across a wealth of topics and subjects (and in 3 languages), he could relate and offer so much to so many people and as a result, an amazing number of people loved Ali.

Ali's passion for cars and bikes ran very deep, we spent many a conversation discussing the merits of one brand or another though I admit his car knowledge was far superior than mine. His departure is sudden and tragic, I feel he had only begun to explore his own capacity.

When I was a child, I would hear story after story from Nader and Adnan about their times spent with Ali Hassan, whether it be in Michigan, Texas or D.C. I always loved hearing these stories, precisely because (besides them all being hilarious) I could hear the sense of brotherly love when they would tell said stories. The way they described these anecdotes were as if they were talking about another sibling. There's one memory I think about a lot since, fortunately, we had audio recordings of and we would listen to these frequently: when Ali would visit us in Texas, the 3 boys would gather around our (my) Sony Kids radio/cassette recorder and record themselves as they put on all sorts of skits. One particular segment was a heated debate between Ali v. Nader & Adnan: which city did the Texas Ayubs live in- Arlington or Dallas? There was most likely a heated Cowboys-Redskins rivalry debate in there, too. They probably occupied themselves for hours at a time doing this. Such simple times.

We got older. In 2008, even though I hadn't heard from Ali in my teenage years, we instantly reconnected; it was so natural, as if we had regularly been in contact. That was the first time I would experience his uncanny ability to genuinely and whole-heartedly connect and stay connected with you. At the time we reconnected, he was living in Turkey and he urged us to visit him. To this day, my adventure in Turkey is still one of my favorite trips, and it was directly because of Ali and the way in which he toured Nader and me around Istanbul, a city which he deeply loved. From that trip, I was able to then form more vivid memories with Ali, this time in adulthood. The following year, this continued at Adnan's wedding in Pakistan, which is where this picture was taken. I love this photo because of the fact that anytime there was a moment that required immediate and close family to be involved, there was absolutely no doubt that Ali would be sitting next to my brothers and me; he was al

I know that that is a relatable experience for the many people he met, loved and continued to keep in touch with. I remember how excited we used to get when abba jani used to tell us of your arrival to Pakistan. All your nieces and nephews were always deligted to have you amidst them. This is so surreal; its unbelievable. Just yesterday I used to see you sliding down the railing, which you almost broke, at ami's house. Every memory has hit me with lightning speed; the grave we dug for Nasir uncle's friend's parrot which wasn't anything short of an architectural miracle and how you used to let me play on your playstation. Every visit you made to Pakistan and every visit you intended to make, we waited for your arrival impatiently. Your constant disbelief over how grown up Hira, Haider and I are now as compared to our little spoilt selves. The arguments we had over India and Pakistan, I cannot seem to get any memory out of my mind. I wish I was there more and I wish I had stayed more in touch. Despite it all,I have vowed to learn from your exemplary life and be as invested in establishing and maintain close ties with all who have made me who I am today. Thank you for everything, the world is surely a changed place and I hope and pray that Jannat ul Firdous awaits you. Ameen.

I have great memories of hanging with Ali at Alia and Luke's wedding. He was a really calm, kind, and humourous gent; he even managed to upstage me on the poem reciting front! His fairwell to me that day was along the lines of, 'I'll see you soon, we're family now'. While I never did get to see Ali again, I thought about him often and was always interested to hear of his latest endeavours. It seemed our lives traced a similar path in many ways. It is not often that you will meet a person like Ali. Someone so down to earth with such warmth and a zest for life. Ali and I never lived in the same country but he always made an effort to bridge the distance and keep that close family bond alive. I know he has done this with family and friends across the globe and made us all feel cared for and appreciated. In the world that we live in today, this is a rare gift and one that I certainly admired him for. The inundation of love and grief for Ali over the last few days is a true testament to his character and I have no doubt that his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of so many.

Taygibay published a tribute .

I only knew Ali online as Abu. Upon learning the news,
I gathered one last comment of his that I had liked or
thanked and my bike and headed out with all three.

My bike being the human powered kind, the ride was
slow for Ali but I tried for max effort : outpacing buses
and cars until leaving the boulevard that becomes the
highway out of town, sprinting against the wind on the
long flat industrial street and then racing the fast rolling
switchback trail along the river detouring flooded parts
until I hit the big field with the tombs, panting and spent.

There, I introduced Ali to Hani, a friend of mine who rests
there since, well almost 10 years back in Afghanistan he ...
anyway, they talked for a moment while I caught my breath.

Of the three, only the bike came back with me. Ali let me go
back after I showed him the entry point of the trail that goes
north west to the mountains, not unlike some in Pakistan ...
eternal hills, pristine, quiet. The comment, I'll leave here :

"There is no honour in honour killing."

I'll remember Ali as both voluntary and measured.
That's better balance than most people can attain.

Tay.

Part 3 of tribute to Ali Hassan, may you sleep easy...
That is why this light shone through him, in gentleness, in grace, in laughter, in passion, even just in a smile.

He gave me that gift of learning to love life more truly, just like he did. I think that he gave it to us all.

Every day that we spend with such people is a little miracle, because they are the rarest people of all. It is a greater miracle still that I had the privilege to know him. And a greater one still that you raised him to be one.

I will remember our time together that way, with great love. I looked up to him then, that fierce light of his shining down on me. I still see it, and I always will.

Here's the rest of Umair's tribute: part 2
"That the secrets of a good life had revealed themselves to him, and he lived and breathed them as naturally as the rivers flow to the sea. That for him life was not here to be merely endured, explained, won, conquered, but to be celebrated, discovered, given, shared, held close, lived to the edges of one’s being. That pure and true way of seeing, of living, is the rarest thing of all. He taught me all that every time I met him.

That is why I looked up to him.

I saw many of my peers, many young people in my generation, get lost in the chase. The pursuit of money and things and glory and titles. I did, too. It’s a meaningless quest. All that matters in the end is the days we have with the people that we love. I learned this the hard way.

Ali Hassan was wise enough not to lose himself this way. Brave enough, patient enough, joyous enough, Wise beyond his years, as they say—but that misses the point. There are many people who spend their whole lives trying and trying but never quite learning the secrets that Ali Hassan lived and breathed so naturally, so simply, so effortlessly.

To live in such a pure way is the best way of all, because it is the way of the heart. The heart is what we treasure most, whether our minds know it or not. And Ali Hassan had a fiercer and stronger and truer heart than than most people I have ever met, or ever will meet. That heart had the courage and wisdom to live a life in a way that taught everyone it met these great and wonderful secrets, of love, of life, of grace, of gentleness, without saying a word.

I wondered, always, where, inner light, that radiance, that seemed so natural to him, came from. After I got sick, I understood: Ali Hassan loved life in a genuine way. Not “life” as in “doing things”. Not “life” as in “his life” or “my life” or “their life”. But life. All life. It’s mysteries and struggles and challenges, its differences and contrasts and improbabilities. That is why

It goes without saying that I loved Ali Hassan like a little brother. You always said, Mom and Fath always said, how much Ali Hassan looked up to me. But the truth is that I looked up to Ali Hassan. Because his light seemed to shine down on me.

Here is why, and it is how I will remember him.

There are many kinds of people in the world. But the rarest kind is one who has a heart that is full of gratitude and love, who has such a deep and profound and genuine connection to life that they teach the rest of us, somehow, what matters, counts, endures, just by being around us. Such people are beautiful in the truest way, and so they are the greatest gift of all. They seem to shine with an inner light that radiates fiercely, from somewhere that the rest of us long to reach.

Ali Hassan was one of those rare people.

I noticed, from a young age, that whenever I met him, he didn’t have an unkind word to say or even thought to think. And then as we grew up, young men who didn’t quite know how to be men in this new world, we would talk about life, about love, about the meaning and purpose and nature of it all. About the challenges and dreams and hopes of living. About the suffering, the struggle, the price, and the gift. And never was there an inkling that life to him was anything less than an improbable treasure. Never would he waste a minute with me on the trivial and superficial things, or on anger, or fear, or regret. Only on the gifts and the dreams and the miracles.

It always seemed to me that deep down, he somehow already knew the great truths of life in a way that most people yearn desperately to all their days long, and still never really do. Th

Ali,
Words fall short; emotions can't be described easily right now.. I'm in a shock and utter disbelief. You were such an amazing, charming personality. You cared so much about our family, about ou community.. Your love for Parachinar, for Pakistan, for Pashtuns, it's so overwhelming..

I still remember your comforting words to me when Abba passed away; but how do I convey the same message to Uncle?

You were always there to mentor me; always there to advise me in studies.. I will miss translating phrases in Pashto for you. Why were you so humble, so kind, so full of life and compassion.

I don't know what to say.. Up above, there are people who will take care of you. May you rest in peace and find solace wherever you are..

Love & respect,

Ps. The two smiling faces have reunited in heaven..

Ali, my brother from Defence.pk where we all knew you as Abu Zolfiqar, I am devastated and still in shock...can't believe I am writing my condolences here. You are taken too soon from us, way too soon.
You made your entry into the forum in 2009 and won everyone's heart including mine. We loved you for your patriotism, your knowledge of defence and strategic affairs, for your well manners...for your ability to reach out to everyone around you...
I thank you for your moral support to me when I parted from the forum and all your kind messages you sent me from time to time. It would have been an honor to meet you in person but I will have to wait till my time comes to join you.
Last year I lost my best friend Munir who also liked you a lot and now you....my world is falling apart. Never knew that your departure would have such a deep impact on me.
With a heavy heart and tears in my eyes, I salute you brother, Its been a privilege to know you and to serve with you. God bless you and your family, I pray to our beloved Allah to give them the strength and courage in these difficult times. Ameen.

As online acquaintances of many years, Ali and I shared two great interests: geopolitics and motorcycles.

In both, he was far more enthusiastic than I could ever hope to be, and I am truly saddened at his sudden loss for his family, friends and the online communities he participated in so well.

Godspeed my riding friend, we will go for a ride on the other side someday.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Ali, but I'm friends with Alia, and if he is anything at all like her, then a great soul has been snuffed out. I hope you can find some measure of comfort seeing how many people he has touched and all the great work he has done.

I first met Ali my freshman year at American University. I fondly remember riding around in his beloved grey Benz and having long talks about Arab culture. The 18 year old me from a small suburban town in New York was extremely impressed by his impressive worldly knowledge. I remember him then as being kinder and more generous than even the best of AU students.

We kept in touch over the years, but really reconnected in 2012. He visited NYC several times and we had a blast. NYE 2013 was one for the books and I'll treasure those memories for a long time. Mansoora invited us over to her NY apartment for tea and I'll never forget Ali showing me the wonderful rooftop...

Ali never failed to keep in touch... often messaging me to tell me how he missed me and wondering what was up. He understood that friendships took work and I truly regret missing his last gchat. I have been haunted by this since I heard the tragic news.

The most impressive part of Ali's legacy? His kindness. This person cared so much about friendship. I never heard him speak badly about ANYONE. I can't say that about anyone else that I know. His parents truly raised a person that was amazing to the core. I will miss his friendship very much.

<3 Shaheen

Spoke with his sister earlier today. Ali was always and will always be an older brother to me. I cried so much that I am out of tears. I think Ali would probably want me to laugh, he was a kind hearted guy with a great sense of humor. I want to send my love to his family, and want Ali to know that I will never forget him. I will probably post again after a little while to share more about him. Right now, I feel like the only way to feel any relief is to pray for him and read Quran. I'm probably still in shock. I just cant stop looking at photos and remembering the times we used to joke around.

You'll always be in my heart Ali.

I never met Ali. I knew him only through defence.pk. He was well known, liked, loved, & respected. I have tears in my eyes, & so do many others who never met him. His intellect, demeanor, & passion made him much larger than his pseudonym @ PDF. He is missed & shall ever live in our collective memory.

Dearest Ayub family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I was heartbroken to hear of Ali's passing. Ali was such a wonderful guy, I remember fondly a night out in London with him. He was the life and soul of the party - such a fun loving person. When I spent time with him again at Alia and Luke's wedding, I was reminded of what a humble, kind and warm person he was...such a credit to your family and such a gentleman. He would be so proud of how you are all dealing with this tragic time...from afar, seeing the Facebook posts from Mariam and Alia only emphasises the beautiful and special family you are. So strong, so positive. Humble, affectionate, kind and warm just like your beloved son and brother. Praying for you all and we love you Ali. Go well. Love to you all. Soraya and family xxx

Dear Ayub family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Ali, but I know Alia. And if Ali was even the tiniest bit as heartwarming, caring, open and amazing person as Alia is, the world has lost someone amazing. It's so hard to loose a brother and a son. I hope you will find comfort in the love for each other as a family, and in the thoughts and prayers of all your friends.
Best regards Marge (one of Alia's many (past) team mates)
