I love you Alfred and will always miss you. You are family to my family. Never knowing when you'd show up, we loved being your "pit-stop" in North Carolina since the 60's. I always expected you'd again appear in the yard or at the door, unannounced, in good spirits. In the words you wrote about Margaret, we "feel some of the void."
Thanks to you, Jacobine, and Carol for making your home my home so long ago.

"Uncle" Alfred was the craziest person I have ever met in my life! I only have a few memories of this old world soul, but they are of a wonderful free spirit who always had a hearty laugh and a warm inner spirit. His mother and my grandmother were sisters, he was always the rogue adventurer who you might see every 20 years if that..I remember being in awe of the old "taxi" that sat in a barn on the farm in Newton Grove NC for so many years. When I was in my 20's and living at Wrightsville Beach NC, Alfred showed up out of nowhere and stayed a few doors down for some weeks...he fit right in to our "scene" and we had a wonderful time enjoying him. Charlie Rafferty is very correct in that Alfred truly did enjoy life and the adventure of living it!

I am saddened by the loss of Alfred and give the family my condolonces. Alfred was the most wonderful man a person could ever know. While living in Taos he was a wonderful neighbor to the Cordova and Cruz family and all of those who lived near by. God bless you Alfred.

We all depended on the belief that Alfred Scales Hobbs would always be here- with us and for us. He was indestructible, we thought, we hoped... He was loved, adored, by all who knew him- especially by the hippies, who with his help, remain unreconstructed to this day. A godfather to my children and my closest friend- he is sorely missed but never to be forgotten. Alfred, Dora, Joe and I and a gaggle of children and cats and little dogs so many years ago in Taos. God speed, Alfred. Rest in peace.

Alfred will be dearly missed by all who knew him! I remember his helping a young couple who had rented a place next door to him. They had nothing and he was so kind to them, attending their wedding reception, and always blessing them. A very special soul!

He was a genuine philosopher a true inspiration who possessed the natural ability of artfully injecting humor into any conversation no matter how serious. Alfred was big man with a big heart with a helping hand for so many. A dear friend and brother, he will be missed.

what an interesting, unique and authentic man he was!i learned a lot from alfred over the years - i first met him during the early 80's and our paths continued to cross occasionaly. he taught me the value of a simple diet (plenty of greens) and the art of living an interesting and stimulating life, with plenty of giving involved and it was't just buttah! he was a brilliant man and a true bon vivant! a taos character; he's immortal now.

I am saddened by Alfred's passing but I never met a man like Alfred in all my life. He was a giant of a man, beloved by so many of his Taos peers and his memory and legend will only grow as time goes by. He was my friend and I'll miss him as I know we all will.

I guess you could say Alfred was my neighbor. He owned the parcel of land just to the west of me in Two Peaks, west of the Gorge from Taos. Every five years on his birthday, Alfred would host a party on this land, the likes of which I gaurantee most people outside of Taos have never seen.
There are few people who practiced the art of living, really living, as Alfred had. in this light, it is difficult to be sad at his passing. I feel a warmth, knowing a man who truly Lived, up to the very end.
You go, Alfred. If there's adventure to be had in the next world, I'm sure you're living it there.

was so sorry to hear of alfreds passing.in 1974 i drove cross country with alfred and my sister carole to live with them in taos, and what a ride it was :) alfred towing his water tanker and getting pulled over in almost every state from n.y to n.m..thinking he was transporting gasoline. he made the best tuna salad, and tought me how to make homemade potato chips.did some partying and went to colo.to be extras in the movie " bite the bullet ".we had some pretty good times, and i wish i could have seen him in later years. well like he'd say "you know my name look up the number ". i'll never forget that name, how could i when he touched my life in so many ways. your friend, mary lou

On behalf of the family of Thomas Cruz, I would like to extend condolences to the family of Alfred. He was a friend of my father Thomas who passed on August 9th and a wonderful neighbor and friend to my maternal grandparents, Jacobo & Susana Cordova of Canon (as well as the rest of the family). May his adventures continue.

There are no magic words of comfort upon the loss of a family member. Only the knowledge that God had called him to his side for a higher purpose affords some comfort.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am very sorry to hear of Alfreds passing. Mary Curtis has told me some very colorful stories about Alfred. I am very sorry to had not known him. I think we would have gotten along very well. I am anxiously waiting for the Travel documentary to be released. Sounds like Alfred lived life to the fullest.

What a wonderful man Alfred was to all the lives he touched, the friends he had, and the families he loved. I have fond memories of this gentle giant from my youth and being around him when he lived at his parents home in NC. Always a traveler and explorer with so many interesting stories. He was a welcomed cousin in the homes of our father and aunt. His energy will be missed in this world.
Warm wishes to the families of Alfred Hobbs,
Love,
